The 1982 Léoville Poyferré is a vintage that I have not seen for a while. This bottle is splendid. It is Ferrous on the nose and offers wilted rose petals, asphalt and pencil shavings, now firmly into its secondary aromatic phase yet maintaining impressive delineation and freshness. Maybe a little rustic compared to recent vintages, yet charming. The palate is very well balanced, and there is a touch of Brettanomyces that would be understandable given the warmth of the growing season. Cedar and graphite flourish toward the finish. This is at a peak now, and as I averred before, I would drink these sooner unless you have larger formats on your hands. Tasted at Burns & German's dinner to celebrate The Complete Bordeaux Vintage Guide book at Medlar. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2023)

The 1982 Léoville Poyferré has long been one of my favorite Saint-Julien wines, and this does not disappoint. Dark in color, it has a gorgeous bouquet of mulberry, raspberry, melted tar and rose petal aromas, and a little exoticism courtesy of a dab of fig. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and quite dense black fruit that merges with blue fruit in the latter half. There is fine backbone to this Saint-Julien, which reveals cedar and graphite toward the fresh, convincing finish. Bottles are just reaching their peak, while large formats will last many more years. Tasted blind at "Xmas" lunch in London. (Neal Martin, Vinous, December 2019)

Slightly deeper garnet , narrower garnet rim . More spicy red and dark fruits , floral touches , wood smoke , quite elegant almost Burgundian in elegance . Sweeter on the palate , sous bois strawberry , cassis and red currant with more tannin , long and well balanced . Starting to drink well , at peak though this will still go for a further 10 years or so in this format

At 40 years this is hitting its tops
Took about 4 hrs to open, nice dark colour and mulberry and berry flavours with long lasting aftertaste
Old St Juliens seem so long lasting and mature with grace
