Donkey & Goat

The Gadabout California White Blend 2018

Sage, leaves of grass, fresh river water. Lovely, piney bouquet.

Mmmmmm love this. Love the bubbles and zippy quality. Light grapefruit. Some of that herbaceousness, but well balanced with cloves and just a breezy wind, really.

Like a Jack Johnson song on a lazy beach day.

Calera Wine Company

de Villiers Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

Do not pop and pour! Give this a decant. This has improved so much with age. Intense ripe cherries and smoke with a hint of vanilla and some earthy tones on the nose. Soft fruits and sweetness on the palette with dusty soft tannins and uplifting acidity. This is a very nice subtle and gentle wine. — 4 years ago

Aubert

Powder House Chardonnay 2017

Shay A
9.4

My wife’s birthday is this week, and Aubert is her favorite. I’d like to let the ‘17s rest a bit more, but when that’s all that is available at the house...

As I’ve noted previously, I think Aubert’s 2017 Chardonnays are, for the most part, more accessible than normal, and this did nothing to dissuade me from that line of thinking. If putting this in the lineup in regards to favorites and comparisons, I think this slots in towards the back-middle of the lineup, ahead of LH&S and Hudson, but just behind Eastside. It seems to be a marriage of Hudson (ripe, juicy, yellow fruits and herbs), & Eastside (more sea salt, streak of herb crusted stone fruits, lemon cream). What stood out to me on this was how tart it was...there was more lemon tang here than any of the other Aubert chards in the portfolio, with added oyster shell. While I think this will obviously get “different”, I’m not sold it gets better with age. It’s very giving now.

Graziano Prà

Otto Soave Classico Garganega 2019

regular soave is my kind of wine (light and thin with bombastic acidity).

this is boutique soave - amazing.

100% organic garangea

stainless-steel only.

12% abv

grapefruit and other citrus, blossom and some fennel and it all ends with some wet stones.

a bit creamy in texture so I'm guessing sur lie.

medium + very enjoyable bitter 🎯

lovely with home made 🍕 with the usual tabasco and sriracha added.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1966

Another trip around the sun, another “66 Bordeaux. This time it was the Cos d’Estournel. Clearly the best of the “66 vintage I have tasted over the last several years on my birthday. It started with salami and spice on the nose. Mid palate it morphed into this lovely soft earthy red fruit and finished with leather and spice. No hint of the typical Cos pencil lead. This wine still had depth and character. I was surprised by the richness and depth of color. It started to fade after about 45 minutes but wow, were those minutes an amazing wine experience. — 4 years ago
